    Mel,
Just a note from a couple of gals who have been in your shoes, er, or hospital bed as it is. I was on the wrong side of a horse in 2001, and crushed my pelvis. My daughter was in a roll-over on ice in her truck coming home from work in 2007. She broke her neck at C-6/C-6 and spent many months in a halo, then finally surgery. We both spent our time in Harborview. I went on to work there later as a nurse. My daughter has healed and is now a horse trainer!

We have been through the long process of healing, learning to do some things again, or at the least re-gaining the confidence to do some of the things we had done before. You will have good days and bad – emotionally and physically. Hang in there – think of your job right now as just healing.

As a nurse, I tell my patients, you only have so much energy for the day. You can use it to heal, or to visit or to move around. Some days, it is perfectly alright to just lay there, and sleep and let your body get on with it’s work. Be cautious – even visiting with friends will tax your strength. It is okay to say you need rest. Ask your nurse and your family to be your safeguards of your time and energy.

Before long you will be ‘free to move about the country’, and this will all be but a memory. A memory that will change your life, re-arrange your friends, bring you renewed hope and faith in your community, and strengthen you in ways you never dreamed.

Take care, you are a strong woman – God bless you for a speedy and thorough recovery. Mickey and Jess / achorvly@gmail.com

Hi! I'm a friend of the Parks' and live out in Arizona. I just heard about what happened to Melanie and wanted to let her know she has a fan club started already out here in the riding community. I've been thinking all day that I'm too lazy to go running this weekend and don't really feel like it, but after reading this and realizing how lucky I am – I better get my a$$ out runnin' this weekend! Better yet, I may even may ride a little. Melanie's spirit inspires me. Can't wait to see those first unassisted steps when they come. You'll be riding in no time girlfriend. We'll have a great excuse to come out and visit our friends and to watch you kick a$$. Arizona is rooting for you-what wonderful friends and family you have. Small steps will lead to a big victory.

    Melanie,
I'm not sure if you'll remember me, but I'm Don Plumbs other half Linda Smart.I also worked in the office & some times in the kitchen at GRSC.I broke my neck 35 yrs ago this past April.I was in a car accident & went out the back window.Back then they weren't sure what to do so my folks were told that if I lived thru the nite I'd never walk again…they never told me until yrs later so being 20 yrs old I figured I had no choice but to fight.I pulverized C4 & my spinal cord was being pinched between C3 & C5.I was unable to move on my right side from the neck down. They drilled a hole on each side of my head (after shaving off alot of my long hair) & put a contraption that reminded me of the old fashion ice tongs in to the holes & then rigged up a rope with 25 pounds hanging on it.It was to pull C3 & C5 apart so I was flat on my back for 6 weeks until surgery where they put a piece of hip in my neck.I was given massive steriods to reduce swelling & that came back to bite me in the butt when I developed a bone disease 5 years later. I've had 5 hip replacements & 2 & 1/2 shoulder replacements all due to the steriods.I have a wonderful full life taking care of 3 horses, 2 kitties, a home & Don.I might walk a little different then others, but I get from point A to point B. I know alot of what you are facing & you will have your good days & bad days & thats all part of this. You have a wonderful family & so many friends praying for you.Keep up the fight & lean on them when you need to.You are in Don & my thoughts & prayers.
    Linda Smart

    “Free Spirit”
My Junos Miss, my barrel horse,
    My teammate and my friend.
We ran barrels, poles and speed events
and thought our trails would never end.
They say a horse is just a horse
    and cowgirls never cry,
But in the end, the truth my friend is
    it’s hard to say good-bye.
And there are times I see you still,
    through sad and misty eyes,
As into Heaven’s clouds you race
    and gallop through the skies.
Young and wild, your spirit free,
no reins to check your stride…
Someday I’ll meet you there, old girl
and once more we will ride.
